Geocaching has been called a high-tech treasure hunt. It seems appropriate, given that a swarm of satellites are engaged to play a game with the planet as the game board. And of course there's the desktop and field technology that makes it possible.

This is not a comprehensive guide to geocaching equipment and software. It is merely a snapshot of the tools and resources that we use to take part in the fun.

geocaching_logo.jpgGeocaching.com is the online nerve centre of the world-wide geocaching community. While the site is open and free to all to join in and play along, a token annual fee brings additional power-tools to the geocacher.

At the heart of the site is the massive database of geocaches around the world. Geocachers can easily locate caches in their own areas, or anywhere they happen to be travelling.

GSAK - Geocaching Swiss Army Knife Print E-mail

gsak_knife.jpgGSAK is the heart of the desktop command centre, interfacing with every other tool in the arseneal, and tieing it all together. GSAK stands for "Geocaching Swiss Army Knife." Before I discovered GSAK, I used a bunch of different programs in a haphazard fashion.

The GSAK program gives you the ability to manage all geocache data in a central location. It receives information from geocaching.com, and passes it on to your GPS receiver, your mapping software, your PDA, and other things I don't even know about.
